Interview with: Sue Tuor

How long have you been making glass beads and how did you get started?
I have been making glass beads since 2018. I met a bead maker through a relative in Germany. For one afternoon, I was allowed to try my hand at it with her. The fascination was so great that I rented studio space from a glass artist in Switzerland for 3 months. After that, I was still so enthusiastic that I set up my own workstation.

What did you find the most difficult to learn?
Controlling the heat and getting the beads to be round was the biggest challenge for me. Later, encasing and shaping figures were added to that.

Who is your role model?
I don't really have one specific person as a role model. It is more all the people I have ever worked with. That includes all the instructors and everyone who was at the Courage Bead association camps.

Where do you get your inspiration?
The techniques or objects that I learned about in the courses gave me many ideas. But I get my inspiration from nature, and sometimes ideas arise while I am working.

What are your goals?
I am currently discovering how much fun it is to play with the glass. I had done that at the beginning, too, but today I feel more confident and more willing to experiment.
So my goal is to continue exploring boundaries and also to find my own style a little more.

What are you taking away from this challenge? What did you like about it?
It was exciting to start by choosing the colors and then making something from them.
I wasn't so focused on techniques, and I pushed my perfectionism aside. That was very relaxing for me, and the ideas came more frequently while I was working.

Product care & materials

What materials do you use?

We use a wide variety of materials – including 925 sterling silver, stainless steel and surgical steel, nickel-free silver-plated and gold-plated metals, genuine minerals, glass, and many other materials for jewelry making.

In our own workshop, we also handcraft glass beads that we use for individual jewelry pieces and accessories.

What's the best way to care for my jewelry?

Keep your jewelry as dry as possible and preferably store pieces individually. Avoid direct contact with perfume, cosmetics, and cleaning agents. If necessary, clean your jewelry gently with a soft cloth. This will help maintain its color, shine, and beauty for as long as possible.

Can I wear my jewelry while showering or exercising?

We recommend removing jewelry before showering, swimming, or exercising – moisture, chlorine, and sweat can damage some materials.
